SANTIAGO.- Born on December 8th, 1935 in Santiago, Juan Bustos Ramírez was one of the most respected members of Parliament among his peers, due to his extensive career as a Human Rights attorney. Married to Claudia Chaimovich, with whom he fathered seven children, Bustos was in his third term as a deputy and had become one of the longest-standing members of Parliament. During his schooldays, Bustos was a classmate of former President Ricardo Lagos at the Instituto Nacional. Additionally, the two men studied Law together later on at the University of Chile. Later, during his time as a member of the “Unidad Popular” government, he worked as a legal advisor for the Ministry of Interior and became very good friends with President Salvador Allende, whom he always claimed to admire. SANTIAGO.- According to an announcement made by the Vice President of the entity, Guillermo Ceroni, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, 72 year-old Juan Bustos, passed away this morning after being hospitalized for two weeks in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Clínica Alemana medical center. Bustos was reportedly in the company of this wife and five of his seven children at the moment of his death. His other two children, who currently reside in Europe, were not able to get back to Chile on time. Juan Bustos, a member of the Socialist Party (PS) was hospitalized at the medical facility on July 24th of this year after complaining of acute respiratory complications, and had been listed in critical condition for the past few days due to multiple organ failure. SANTIAGO.- During a speech in honor of Social Leader’s Day, the Minister of the Executive Branch, Francisco Vidal, was informed of the death of Chamber of Deputies president Juan Bustos. Vidal received the information from presidential advisor Rodrigo Peñailillo, who approached him and whispered the news in his ear. The Presidential Spokesman then immediately announced to the audience the unfortunate death of the highly respected legislator and human rights defense lawyer. SANTIAGO.- The Chamber of Deputies web site has created a virtual book of condolences, where those who wish to do so may leave a message of sympathy following the death of the President of the Chamber, Deputy Juan Bustos Ramírez. On the site, users can leave their name and a message they deem appropriate concerning the death of the representative, which occurred yesterday in Santiago. The comments will later be displayed in the virtual book, which will remain visible on the official website for the Chamber of Deputies.
