SANTIAGO.- An abandoned home located at 150 Porvenir, in the Municipality of Santiago, was completely consumed by flames early this morning. According to witnesses, the incident began just after 2:00 AM due to causes that are still under investigation. The residence used to be a hotel, but had remained uninhabited for more than a year. 20 fire engines and some 250 fire-fighters arrived at the scene. After an hour and a half of work, fire-fighters managed to control the flames, which had spread to a neighboring home and destroyed a utility van. As a result of the fire, an 80 year-old woman was left homeless. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, neighbors say that they heard an explosion in the back of the home and saw broken windows in the front of the residence. SANTIAGO.- Through the National Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG), the Ministry of Agriculture announced today that as of May 6th of 2009, Chile has been authorized to export dairy products to Russia. The Russian market is one of the largest importers of dairy products worldwide, and a press release from SAG has indicated that the new development will open up significant business prospects for the national dairy industry. Similar expectations exist for the bovine meat production industry. It was announced from Russia that the zoological health certification model has been approved, allowing the process of opening the market to move on to its final stage. GENEVA.- According to a report generated by the High Office of the United Nations for Human Rights, Chile needs to monumentally improve the situation of women in the nation, who are reportedly suffering from discrimination and under-representation in several sectors of society. The study was presented today during the nation's "Examen Periódico Universal", as part of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. The document highlights several instances of discrimination against women, such as when it comes to property ownership upon marriage. The text recommends that a change be made to the regulation establishing that, unless a woman has been married under the decree of "separation of assets", she shall not be allowed to establish a commercial relationship with her own money without the express authorization of her husband. SANTIAGO.- An undetermined number of suspects robbed an automatic teller early this morning by removing the machine from its platform at a Servipag office in the Municipality of Renca. According to police, the incident took place just after 4:00 AM, when the suspects arrived at the scene in a van and smaller vehicle. At the location, the thieves broke open the locks and metallic curtain and subsequently smashed a window pane. The suspects then tied up the machine using a method known as the "cowboy" to remove it from its base. Witnesses told police that the individuals may have dragged the ATM machine for a little more than a block before opening it on the street and taking trays filled with the money and abandoning the rest of the apparatus. LOS ANGELES.- The popular cartoon character "Papelucho", created by writer Marcela Paz and taken to the big screen by Director Alejandro Rojas, will be seen in North American theatres now that Mexican distributor Gussi has acquired the rights to the film. According to Variety, the animated film, which attracted close to 200 thousand audience members in Chile, was acquired through FilmSharks International – a Latin American company in charge of selling the film's rights abroad. The feature-length film also has been signed to make its way to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and the Middle East, thanks to operations with film distributors Impacto Cine, EuroCine, Escalon Films and Media International Pictures. SANTIAGO.- Police from the 19th Commissary of Providencia have arrested a man that had been pimping eight Paraguayan women and two Chilean women working as prostitutes in the municipality. At approximately midnight last night, police raided two homes on the streets of Puyehue and Los Naranjos, where undercover officers managed to arrest 48 year-old Hugo Figueroa Salazar. According to preliminary investigations, the man had contacted the Paraguayan women by Internet and paid for their bus tickets to Chile. The women charged $20,000 pesos for their services and gave half of the amount to Figueroa, allowing them to earn up to 150,000 pesos per day. SANTIAGO.- Five of the 27 cars of a train belonging to the company Fepasa went off track today at the 57th kilometer near San Francisco de Mostazal in the Sixth Region and left one person injured. The incident took place at approximately 5:50 AM as the train was traveling from Talca to Santiago. According information released by the company in the form of a memo, the incident was caused by "repairs that were being performed on the railway by EFE employees". Meanwhile, Chilean Federal Railways has indicated that the causes of the accident are still being investigated. SAMU, police and Fepasa personnel were dispatched to the scene following the accident.
