SANTIAGO.- Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is scheduled to hold a long-awaited meeting with her United States counterpart, Barack Obama, on June 23rd of this year. The President herself made the news public while announcing the appointment of Chilean national Arturo Valenzuela as the new head of U.S. diplomacy for Latin America. SANTIAGO.- The Central Bank has indicated that, for the first time in a decade, the Chilean economy could shrink this year amidst an adverse and uncertain international scenario. The financial institution's Monetary Policy Report (IpoM) for May predicts a variation of between -0.75% and 0.25% for 2009, leaning more towards a negative figure. The Central Bank's previous report in January had estimated that the figure would be between 2% and 3%. According to the document, a decline in the Gross Domestic Product in 2009 would be only the fifth to occur over the last 50 years. The report indicates that economic activity registered drops in 1975, 1982, 1983 and 1999. SANTIAGO.- Police arrested three individuals that took part in the robbery of a ski supply store using the "moon-landing" method of crashing a vehicle through the front window pane of the business. The assailants also attempted to take an automatic teller machine from a bank branch in Chicureo. Those arrested were identified as Wibo Carrasco Aránguiz, 18, Juan Castro Urrutia, 23, and Carlos Sáez Osorio, 22. The latter had been previously arrested a startling 40 times for various offenses and, according to police, went out of the jail one month ago. The suspects arrived at the Los Ingleses shopping center, located at kilometer 2 of Avenida Chicureo, along with at least four other individuals. SANTIAGO.- Just as had been previously announced, it was confirmed today that the new trainer finally chosen to take over Colo Colo would be Argentine national Hugo Tocalli. The former Sub 20 Argentina coach, which lead his team to victory at the 2008 World Cup in Canada was chosen instead of his fellow countryman Diego Cagna, who had been thought of as the favourite to lead Colo Colo. The coach was confirmed this morning on Radio Agricultura by Gabriel Ruiz-Tagle, who said that the new trainer for Colo Colo will have to, amongst other things, work to restore the team and transform the group into a powerhouse. SANTIAGO.- Undersecretary of Health Jeannette Vega has said that effects of the human influenza virus are less serious than was previously thought, but has not ruled out the possibility that the illness will remain present in the world for quite a while. "It seems that the illness is very contagious, but less serious than what had been originally thought. Although there are cases that lead to respiratory complications, such incidences are rare", the authority stated during an interview with Radio Cooperativa. Vega added that the epidemic will not be as severe as had been expected, and said that it "could be like having an additional flu epidemic". The director of the organization, Carlos Huneeus, has said that this represents an unprecedented spike in approval ratings since the return of democracy and can be attributed to several factors.
