SANTIAGO.- According to the information released today by the Ministry of Health, another listeriosis-related death was registered yesterday after an 81 year-old man passed away at the Universidad Católica Clinical Hospital. Doctor Helia Molina, who is the head of the Public Policy and Promotion Division of the Ministry of Health, stated that a total of seven people have died so far this year as a result of contact with the bacteria. "He was an 81 year-old elderly man that was suffering from chronic heart problems and was in very dire health condition", indicated Molina. The doctor added that, just as the three cases that were reported yesterday, the man was considered to be at risk. SANTIAGO.- According to information released today by the Central Bank, Chilean copper exports totalled US$ 1.737 billion dollars in April – indicating a drop of 52% when compared to the same month of 2008. With the new figure, copper shipments for the first four months of this year have totalled US$ 5.970 billion dollars, representing a plummet of 59% in comparison to the same time period last year. The production of copper has been affected by an industry slowdown as international prices have plummeted from the highs they reached last year. The National Mining Society (Sonami) has estimated that Chilean copper exports could reach some US$ 20 billion dollars in 2009, while production is expected to increase only 1.3% in comparison to last year. SANTIAGO.- A movie-style crash took place at the corner of Exequiel Fernández and La Aguada en Macul last night, where a car fell into the La Aguada canal after colliding with a taxi. The incident took place just after 11:00 PM, when a Toyota Yaris heading northbound and being driven by 18 year-old Hector Cárdenas Soto was hit by a taxi driven by 57 year-old David Catrivil Collio. Catrivil was travelling eastbound and, according to initial reports, may have run a red light. As a result of the violent impact, the taxi driver was ejected from his vehicle, while the car went up on the central median and destroyed a protection barrier before falling into the waters of the canal. As Catrivil was transported to the Salvador Hospital, fire-fighters managed to rescue Cárdenas using special equipment to cut the young man out of the twisted metal frame of his vehicle. SANTIAGO.- Military prosecutor Eduardo Musante questioned Willian Butto Yarur for over an hour this morning. 53 year-old Butto, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, is charged with shooting three police officers on Tuesday at his home in La Reina. "The proceedings were successful. He cooperated with the questions he was asked by the court authorities and was informed of his arrest under the Quinta Fiscalía Militar de Santiago", Musante stated while leaving the interrogation, which took place in the Doctor Manuel Matus room of the Salvador Hospital. SANTIAGO.- President Michelle Bachelet stated this morning that the Chilean economy will be amongst those most capable of rapidly recuperating from the crisis, pointing out that forecasts predict a period of between five and seven months. "We believe that Chile is going to be one of the countries to recover fastest", the Head of State said on Radio Cooperativa. The President also said that economic predictions released yesterday by the Central Bank "are in line with the scenarios that we have been working with". In the financial entity's Monetary Policy Report (IPoM) for May, the Central Bank predicts a range of between -0.75% and 0.25% for national economic growth this year and indicates that the figure is more likely to be towards the lower end of the spectrum. SANTIAGO.- The Chilean film "La nana" will continue its international tour before premiering in Chile. Organizers of the Sydney International Film Festival confirmed today that the movie will be amongst the 12 films included in the official competition. The Australian event, which will take place between June 3rd and June 14th, will feature a strong European presence among the films competing for first prize, with five of the movies hailing from the "Old Continent". One of the most difficult "rivals" for the Chilean film by Sebastián Silva, who has also been invited to Sydney, will be the latest creation of British director Ken Loach, "Looking for Eric", which will be the first movie to debut at the festival. SANTIAGO.- According to the latest poll taken by the Center for Contemporary Reality Studies (CERC), a potential difference of 11 percentage points could separate the candidate for the "Coalition for Change", Sebastián Piñera, and Concertación candidate Eduardo Frei during the second round of the presidential elections. When asked the closed question regarding the possibility that neither of the candidates obtains absolute majority during the elections in December and the second round were to be between Piñera and Frei, 44% of interviewees indicated that they would vote for the former, while 33% opted for the DC senator. According to the study, Piñera holds more support amongst those registered to vote than amongst those who are not, with figures of 47% and 32% respectively. Frei, on the other hand, holds a similar amount of support within both groups, 33% and 29%...

LONDON.- Chilean choreographer José Vidal will premier in London this weekend with a show featuring two of his latest works that are characterized for being original and contemporary. Vidal, who has lived in the British capital since 2005, is the author of "The Kiss" and "Inventario", the two creations that will be debuted tomorrow for the English public, which is accustomed to a more classical type of dance. "People are very conservative here when it comes to technique; they are just now starting to have things that we already saw in Chile ten years ago", explains the artist. SANTIAGO.- At the tender age of only 17, coastal native Camila Silva is an up-and-coming star in Chilean tennis. Today, Silva is the 11th best-ranked player in the juniors' female circuit, but she knows and her talent indicates that she can go even higher. For now, the national tennis player is already fulfilling one of her 2009 goals to enter the Roland Garros juniors' tournament. Thanks to her ranking, Silva was directly included in the clay court tournament and is one of three South American tennis players in the competition. According to the acceptance list revealed by the tournament organizers, Silva heads the South American list of athletes, which also includes Verónica Cepede of Paraguay and Paula Ormaechea of Argentina. SANTIAGO.- The remains of former Christian Democracy minister Claudio Huepe, who died from a heart attack on Monday while visiting a shopping center in Venezuela, arrived in Chile this morning. The LAN flight coming from Caracas landed at the Santiago Airport at 5:18 AM with the coffin containing the remains of Huepe. A wake will be held for the former minister today at the former Congreso Nacional building in downtown Santiago. The General Undersecretary of Government Affairs, Edgardo Riveros, arrived at the airport to receive Huepe's body.
