SANTIAGO.- A family living in the Las Araucarias neighborhood of the Municipality of La Florida had a rough awakening this morning when a truck flipped over, destroying the wall of their home before slamming into an electrical post. The incident took place at 7:50 AM, when the driver of the vehicle (19 year-old Jonathan Olivares Castillo) lost control of the truck while driving over a speed bump located just meters from the house. The vehicle swerved left and collided with the curb, causing it to flip over. The truck then crashed into the wall of the home and finally rammed into a light post, ripping it from its foundation. The truck also hit and killed a dog and destroyed ten slot machines that were located in the front yard of the residence, which was being used as a storage location. SANTIAGO.- The presidents of the Concertación parties expressed today their hopes of reaching a parliamentary agreement with all of the parties that make up the political alliance "Juntos Podemos" and urged leftist leaders to re-evaluate their stance so that "hopefully in May they can join the pact". SANTIAGO.- Despite having the public against them at the Manuel Bonilla Collisseum in Lima, the Chilean women's volleyball team managed to triumph and then secure a very tough win against Colombia to take third place in the 2009 Copa Latina tournament. During their fourth match in the international championship in the Peruvian capital, Hugo Jáuregui's squad played well, but secured the match only during the tie-break phase. During the first part, the Chilean team dominated the Colombian players. In the second part of the match however, the tide turned. In the third portion of the match, Chile gained steam and pulled ahead. Colombia, however was able to step up their game once again, leaving the score at 2-2. SANTIAGO.- Deputy Gabriel Ascencio (DC), who is a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Lower House, has given his support to the national demonstration being held today by national prison guard officials claiming the government has failed to fulfil several of its committments. In Ascencio's opinion, "the situation should be an opportunity to focus on the penitentiary crisis that, if left unresolved, could generate serious conflicts and further tragedies similar to those that have already occurred" referring to the fire at Colina II, where seven inmates died. KITZBÜHEL.- Chilean tennis player Nicolás Massú (ATP No.122) debuted with a win today at the Kitzbühel ATP tournament in Austria. Chile's number three player triumphed over Czech national Robin Vik (ATP No.379) with scores of 6-4 and 6-2 in one hour and 47 minutes of game play. The first set began evenly for both players; however Massú managed to pull ahead after a break point in the fifth game allowed him to close out the set with a score of 6-4 in 51 minutes. SANTIAGO.- According to information released today by the Central Bank, the Chilean economy reported a 2.1% contraction for the first quarter of this year. The figure is far below that reported for the same period in 2008, when the GDP grew by 3%, as well as the total growth for the whole of 2008, which reached 3.2%. Market forecasts had predicted a contraction of close to 2.4%. According to the Central Bank, the sectors that experienced decline were Mining, Trade, Transportation, Construction and Industry – which reported the greatest drop. Meanwhile, internal demand fell by 7.6% and total consumption dropped by 0.6%. Furthermore, real national gross earnings slid 5.8%, following a 6.7% decrease in the previous quarter. SANTIAGO.- The head of the 11th Civil Court of Santiago, Justo Pastor Villacura, has suspended the summoning of President Michelle Bachelet to testify in the lawsuit against Transantiago. The judge made the decision after analyzing the request made by the State Defense Council (CDE), which came out against the proceedings requested by Attorney Felipe Betancourt. Betancourt is representing more than 1,700 public transportation users who are demanding damages of $20 million pesos each. Betancourt argued that on May 21st of 2007, the President "made a public apology" for the problems caused to citizens by Transantiago, and therefore her testimony is relevant. SANTIAGO.- A Transantiago bus driver, identified as 42 year-old Eduaro Guillermo Sepúlveda Sánchez, died this morning after he was crushed by two buses in a confusing accident that took place in Pudahuel. According to police, the incident took place at 7:10 AM, when the bus being driven by Sepúlveda was hit in the back end by a J-07 feeder bus driven by Rafael Faúndez Carvajal. Following the collision, the drivers got out of their vehicles and began arguing in the street between the two buses. Suddenly, a semi-truck driven by Germán Bahamondes González violently crashed into Sepulveda's bus, which did not have its service lights on at the time and was surrounded by thick fog in the area.
