SANTIAGO.- Minister of Health Álvaro Erazo called on the population to abstain from purchasing antiviral medicines as a preventive measure against swine flu, since the drugs are entirely ineffective unless one is actually ill. "It is important to communicate to the population that there are no benefits to consuming these antivirals unless advised to do so by a doctor, because unless you have influenza, it is not recommended. If we were to have a case in Chile, the people who need medicine will have it", manifested the health authority in an interview with Radio ADN. SANTIAGO.- Reiterating previous statements, Central Bank president José de Gregorio announced today that the financial entity may be looking to make further cuts to the monetary policy rate (TPM) over the next few months, taking the figure to historic lows. The Central Bank Council slashed the Monetary Policy Rate by 650 base points between January and April amid a rapid decrease in inflation, which could return to 3% by the middle of this year. SANTIAGO.- After the Netherlands denied that an agreement had been reached to sell 18 used F-16 fighter planes to Chile, Minister of Defense Fransico Vidal admitted today that the documents have yet to be signed. The political authority reiterated however, that the purchase of the aircrafts is practically a done deal. Francisco Vidal categorically assured today that negotiations with the Dutch government have ended and said that the contract would be signed very shortly. SANTIAGO.- Amidst growing concern in much of the world over possible contamination from outbreaks of swine flu, mainly affecting Mexico, Undersecretary of Health Jeanette Vega has denied that cases of the illness have been reported in Chile and issued a call for citizens to follow the recommendations given by authorities on the matter. Vega asserted on Radio ADN that the Ministry of Health has ruled out three suspicious cases. "What we have in Chile is the seasonal flu, for which this is the last week of vaccinations", added the undersecretary.
