PRAGUE.- The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mariano Fernández, stated today that Chile has no need to "offer explanations" regarding the purchase of new weaponry, since the nation is currently undergoing a general "technological renovation process" that also includes the Armed Forces. Upon arriving in Prague, where he is scheduled to participate in a ministry meeting held by nations in the European Union (UE) and River Group, Minister Fernández was questioned about the purchase of F-16 airplanes from Holland and concern that some political sectors of Peru have expressed. SANTIAGO.- The long-awaited concert series "Grandes Pianistas 2009 Radio Beethoven" is scheduled debut on Thursday of this week at the Santiago Teatro Municipal with solo artist Jie Chen's first performance in Chile. The "Grandes Pianistas" series is one of the most long-awaited events of the Chilean music season. The event has been held at the Municipal Theater since 1995 and has attracted a major following thanks to the excellent artists and fascinating programs it brings. The cycle will begin with a performance by solo pianist Jie Chien. SANTIAGO.- The Sixth Annual Study on Software Piracy generated by the International Data Corporation (IDC) and Business Software Alliance (BSA) revealed today that 67% of the software programs used in Chile are illegal copies, commonly referred to as "pirates". According to the report, Chile is amongst the few countries in Latin America that registered an increase in piracy rates over the last year. While most of the economies in the region managed to lower illegal software levels, Chile –along with Guatemala and Paraguay- reported an increase. According to the study, Chile lost a total of US$ 202 million dollars as a result of software piracy during 2008. In 2007, losses due to the same cause totalled US$ 187 million dollars. SANTIAGO.- Good news arrived from London today amid the current crisis within the Chilean Davis Cup team following the resignation of Fernando González. As a result of the World Group Play-offs drawing today, Chile has been paired against Austria to play a home match in hopes of cementing a position. If the team remains the same as the one that lost during the first round against Germany, the highest level player for Austria will be Jurgen Melzer, who is currently seeded at ATP No.27.
