SANTIAGO.- The word most repeated by Patricio Frez only hours after being robbed at the door to his home is "helplessness". "Last night, when we were left alone, the helplessness takes over. SANTIAGO.- Minister of Planning Paula Quintana, her Chief of Cabinet, Carolina Martínez, and the chauffer of a vehicle they were travelling in, Rafael Silva, received only minor injuries after being involved in a traffic accident this morning at the intersection of Eliodoro Yáñez and Hernando de Aguirre, in the Municipality of Providencia. Heeding the suggestion of the doctors that treated her, the secretary of state was taken to her home to rest. According to reports issued in a brief memo from the Ministry she heads, Quintana underwent several medical exams at the Hospital del Trabajador. SANTIAGO.- This morning, national police released reports indicating a total of 23 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents on highways nationwide over the long weekend. Major Marcelo Ávalos told Emol that the number of deaths was the result of 709 traffic accidents. Of the fatalities, nine involved pedestrians that were hit “with the main party responsible being the pedestrian”. The 23 fatalities also include five alcohol-related accidents, while the majority of the crashes were caused by speeding and loss of vehicle control. “We deeply regret the number of deaths; although there were 35 fatalities reported in 2008 during the same dates, the figure is still significant. SANTIAGO. - According to a poll taken by the Ministry of Agriculture through the Consumer Unit of the Agricultural Studies and Policy Office (ODEPA), apples, romaine lettuce and potatoes displayed the most significant price differences this week with variations of up to 200% between supermarkets and open markets. In the case of Granny Smith apples, the price variation reached 200%, with averages fluctuating between $599 pesos at supermarkets in the eastern part of Santiago and $200 pesos at open fruit and vegetable markets in the southern sector of the capital. The differences observed between romaine lettuce and desirée potatoes reached 195%, with both vegetables selling for between $590 and $200 pesos. In the case of lettuce, the most expensive prices were found in supermarkets in the southern part of the city, while the cheapest prices were observed in open-air markets...

SANTIAGO.- Chilean tennis player Fernando González (ATP No.12) enjoyed a solid debut today at the French Open. On clay court number seven of the Parisian venue, Chile’s number one player soundly defeated Czech player Jiri Vanek (ATP No.152) with set scores of 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3 in one hour and 26 minutes. González began to shine early in the first set with extraordinary game play featuring an impressive cross forehand and backhand that allowed him to close out the set without much fuss. During the second set, González continued to excel and cemented his position in the fifth and seventh game while breaking Vanek´s serve and finally ending with a score of 6-2 in 24 minutes. SANTIAGO.- Some councillors belonging to the Central Bank forecasted during their most recent gathering that the monetary policy rate will be between 1.0% and 0.75% by the third semester to guarantee the most recent inflation forecasts and to augment economic activity. The councillors decided to lower the rate by 50 base points at their May meeting, leaving the monetary policy rate at a historic level of 1.25%, even though the possibility of reducing the figure by a quarter of a percentage point was considered. One councillor pointed out that the Monetary Policy Report released for May includes the nation’s latest economic forecasts and supports a significant cut to the monetary policy rate. The latest Monetary Policy Report predicted that inflation would reach 0.6% this year, while it could be at 2.3% in 2010 according to the spectrum currently forecasted by the Central Bank.
