SANTIAGO.- It is the end of this road for Nicolás Massú (ATP No.120) at the Roland Garros Grand Slam Tournament, after he was defeated today during the second round of the championship by Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP No.18) with scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2 in 1 hour and 14 minutes. The Chilean player has once again been left behind after a match where his Swiss counterpart was noticeably superior, with Massú playing erratically and displaying problems with his backhand. SANTIAGO.- The Chilean national soccer team was defeated by Japan at the Nagai Stadium in Osaki with a score of 4-0. The match was part of the Kirin Cup, which also features the participation of Belgium. Chile began the game on a positive note, with a great deal of enthusiasm and effort. Nevertheless, the Chilean defense lost focus at some key points of the match, allowing Japan several opportunities to take advantage of the situation. The center-forward for Japan, Okasaki, scored two goals in four minutes. At minute 52 of the match, defense player Abe took a corner shot and made a goal, complicating the scenario with a score of 3-0. SANTIAGO.- Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mariano Fernández, confirmed this morning that the Chilean government has decided to ask for explanations from the ambassadors of Brazil and Argentina after the diplomats from both nations issued statements in Lima in favor of Peru's maritime claim at The Hague. Fernández stated that "the affirmations made by the ambassadors in a regional capital surprised me, since ambassadors generally act upon instructions", reported Radio Cooperativa. SANTIAGO.- Without even dishevelling his hair, Chile's number one tennis player, Fernándo González, made it through to the third round of the Roland Garros tournament. While González easily defeated Czech player Jiri Vanek on Monday (6-3, 6-2 and 6-3), today he continued his impressive game play. The Chilean athlete defeated Portuguese national Rui Machado in only 1 hour and 24 minutes with a scoreboard identical to his winning match on Monday. SANTIAGO.- Police arrested five thieves this morning after they stole several sporting goods items from the first floor of the "Energy Fitness Club" gymnasium, located in the Municipality of Vitacura. The incident took place just after midnight, when five individuals arrived at the aforementioned fitness center in two stolen vehicles –a Subaru Impreza and a Subaru Legacy- and used blunt objects to destroy one of the establishment's front window panes. The individuals then, in less than 5 minutes, stole sweatpants, jackets and athletic sweatshirts from the business. Nevertheless, the thieves were seen by employees at a gas station located in front of the gym, who called the police. When police arrived on the scene, they began to pursue the suspects. This was the emphatic statement made by government spokesperson Carolina Tohá while mentioning the press reports indicating that Chile and Holland may have reached the beginnings of an agreement for the purchase of eighteen F-16 planes. SANTIAGO.- According to the Internal Tax Service (Servicio de Impuestos Internos, SII), income taxes declared in April totalled an equivalent of US$ 8.895 billion dollars, compared to the US$ 9.286 billion dollars last year - representing a drop of 4.2%. Among the primary tax categories included in those that registered decreases were Primary Category (-3.3%), Primary Category for large private mining companies (-17.1%), Specific Mining Activity (-19.9%), and Additional Taxes for State Companies (excluding Codelco) with -57.6%. "This is directly related to the slowdown of economic activity during 2008, given that product grew by approximately 3.2% during the year and closed out the year with growth during the last quarter of only 0.2%", informed the SII. SANTIAGO.- Undersecretary of Health, Jeanette Vega, reiterated this morning that Gladys Azócar, 38, who is currently hospitalized at the Clínica Las Condes medical center for infection of the AH1N1 virus, continues in serious condition following respiratory failure. "She is in serious condition, we transported her to Clínica Las Condes last night because she suffered a catastrophic respiratory failure and we needed to connect her to a machine (…) that functions like an external lung", Vega told Radio Cooperativa.
