PARIS.- As part of President Michelle Bachelet's official visit to France, the nation has signed two energy agreements with Chile for the development of Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE). The Chilean Minister of Energy, Marcelo Tokman, and the French head of Ecology, Energy and Territorial Planning, Hubert Falco, signed a specific agreement concerning renewable energies, as well as a letter of intent specifying the conditions of the collaboration. SANTIAGO.- An extensive anti-narcotics police raid on nine homes this morning in Curacaví ended in the arrest of ten people – seven men and three women. The operation was carried out in an effort to disband two drug-trafficking groups that had been operating in three slums located in the aforementioned municipality. The groups had allegedly been using grocery, vegetable and liquor businesses as facades to mask their income. The operation, which began at 6:00 AM, included the participation of 300 officials belonging to Special Police Forces (GOPE), the OS7, the 30th Commissary of Radio Patrols, the Sub-commissary of Curacaví, as well as police canine units. SANTIAGO.- One week after arriving in Chile and spending a few days with his family, Esmeralda ship marine guard Jaime Hott appeared before the Navy today. At the beginning of May of this year, Hott was arrested by the Canadian police force and accused of boarding a yacht without permission and physically assaulting a couple in the port of Quebec. SANTIAGO.- The National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today that industrial production fell during April, registering a drop of 11.1%. The decrease can primarily be explained by a decline in the production of companies linked to the food, non-metallic mining and forestry industries. In April of 2008, industrial production reported an increase of 4.4% from the previous year, while in March of this year it reported a decrease of 7.1%. Market forecasts had predicted that the figure would only drop by 8.7% during the fourth month of 2009. Following a negative GDP of 2.1%, the indices for April of 2009 have evolved unevenly. SANTIAGO.- Surpassing market estimates, unemployment rose to 9.8% during the February-April quarter. The National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today that the unemployment rate has totalled an increase of 2.2% over the last 12 months and 0.6% when compared to the previous quarter. The market forecast was that the unemployment rate would be between 9.2% and 9.6%. Over the last 12 months, the unemployment rate has risen in 13 of the 15 regions within the country. Decreases in the figure were registered for the second consecutive time in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, as well as Tarapacá. Meanwhile the most significant hikes in unemployment were registered in the regions of La Araucanía, Los Lagos and Atacama amidst economic slowdown. PARIS.- While on an official visit to France, President Michelle Bachelet and the General Director of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, signed a document today to promote sustainable ecotourism on Easter Island. According to the Mayor of Easter Island, Luz Zasso, the primary objective of the initiative is to "foster human capital in ecotourism" in an effort to preserve the heritage of the island. SANTIAGO.- According to the Undersecretary of Medical Networks for the Ministry of Health (Minsal), Julio Montt, 38 year-old Gladys Azócar, who is listed in serious condition after suffering catastrophic respiratory failure caused by human influenza, displayed a slight improvement today. The woman was hospitalized at the Posta Central medical facility on Saturday and transferred two days later to Clínica Las Condes after suffering critical respiratory failure that compromised 90% of her lungs.
