SANTIAGO.- A family living in the Las Araucarias neighborhood of the Municipality of La Florida had a rough awakening this morning when a truck flipped over, destroying the wall of their home before slamming into an electrical post. The incident took place at 7:50 AM, when the driver of the vehicle (19 year-old Jonathan Olivares Castillo) lost control of the truck while driving over a speed bump located just meters from the house. The vehicle swerved left and collided with the curb, causing it to flip over. The truck then crashed into the wall of the home and finally rammed into a light post, ripping it from its foundation. The truck also hit and killed a dog and destroyed ten slot machines that were located in the front yard of the residence, which was being used as a storage location. SANTIAGO.- Undersecretary of Health Jeannette Vega has said that effects of the human influenza virus are less serious than was previously thought, but has not ruled out the possibility that the illness will remain present in the world for quite a while. "It seems that the illness is very contagious, but less serious than what had been originally thought. Although there are cases that lead to respiratory complications, such incidences are rare", the authority stated during an interview with Radio Cooperativa. Vega added that the epidemic will not be as severe as had been expected, and said that it "could be like having an additional flu epidemic". The minister indicated that if this were to occur, the strain would be included in the vaccination for next year. SANTIAGO.- Tests performed on five patients that are currently hospitalized at the National Torso Institute (Instituto Nacional del Tórax) after displaying symptoms similar to those of swine flu have ruled out the illness in all of the cases. Health officials confirmed the information and stated that the five individuals will be discharged from the medical center sometime after noon today. In addition to the five potential cases in Santiago, Ministry of Health officials have up until now confirmed one possible case of the illness in Atacama, one in Valparaíso, one in Coyhaique and another in the Araucanía Region. Several people, primarily arriving from Mexico and the United States, have been sent to the medical center to undergo voluntary exams designed to rule out the presence of the virus. SANTIAGO.- Chilean racer Francisco López displayed his best performance yet at the Tunisian Rally today after earning the second-best time in the seventh phase of the event. The result has allowed the Chilean national to climb to the third slot of the general ranking. López covered the 410 kilometers between Brack and Quaryat in 4:42:48, finishing less than four minutes behind the first place participant for the day, Spanish driver Jordi Vildom, and arriving ahead of event leaders Marc Coma and Cyril Despres for the first time. Nevertheless, followers of the Finnish group will have to wait.
