SANTIAGO.- The long-awaited concert series "Grandes Pianistas 2009 Radio Beethoven" is scheduled debut on Thursday of this week at the Santiago Teatro Municipal with solo artist Jie Chen's first performance in Chile. The "Grandes Pianistas" series is one of the most long-awaited events of the Chilean music season. The event has been held at the Municipal Theater since 1995 and has attracted a major following thanks to the excellent artists and fascinating programs it brings. The cycle will begin with a performance by solo pianist Jie Chien. The 24 year-old artist from China will perform the "Sonnet in B-Flat Major" by Joseph Haydn; "Chaconne" by Bach; ballads number 1, 2, 3 and 4 by Chopin, and will play "Hundred Birds Pay Homage to Phoenix" by Chinese composer Wang Jian Zhong for the first time in Chile. SANTIAGO.- Ecuador's national soccer team began training yesterday for their upcoming South Africa World Cup 2010 qualifying matches against Chile and Venezuela. Amidst intense rainfall and frigid temperatures, the team began their first day of practice at the Parcayacu Athletic Complex. The coach of the "Sixto Vizuete" was forced to change his plans due to the poor attendance of scheduled players: only 10 of the 23 that had been initially summoned arrived. In light of the situation, and knowing that the players belonging to the Universitaria Athletic League would not be able to play today due to the South American Cup return match, Vizuete increased his starting team to seven players to create a sparring team that played against a team of the official national players, which did not include those who currently play abroad.
