SANTIAGO.- 21,734 tickets have already been sold for the second-to-final home match of the Chilean National Soccer Team in the qualifying phase for the South Africa 2010 World Cup. On Wednesday, June 10 at 9:00 PM in the National Stadium, Chile goes up against Bolivia in what could potentially be a huge step for the National Team in their race to make it to South Africa. The tickets are on sale at Paris department stores in Iquique, La Serena, Viña del Mar, Valparaíso, Rancagua, Curicó, Talca, Concepción and Santiago; and are also available at the Feria del Disco in Antofagasta, La Serena, Viña del Mar, Rancagua, Talca, Chillán, Concepción, Temuco, Osorno and Puerto Montt. Ticket prices run from $9,800 pesos in the general stands to $143,800 in the "high pacific" seats. An additional 20% discount is offered if one purchases with the "Mas" card ($7.800 general). SANTIAGO.- According to information released today by the Central Bank, Chilean copper exports totalled US$ 1.737 billion dollars in April – indicating a drop of 52% when compared to the same month of 2008. With the new figure, copper shipments for the first four months of this year have totalled US$ 5.970 billion dollars, representing a plummet of 59% in comparison to the same time period last year. The production of copper has been affected by an industry slowdown as international prices have plummeted from the highs they reached last year. The National Mining Society (Sonami) has estimated that Chilean copper exports could reach some US$ 20 billion dollars in 2009, while production is expected to increase only 1.3% in comparison to last year. SANTIAGO.- The most harrowing Primera B news reported last weekend was the scandal provoked by players from Coquimbo Unido and Deportes Antfogasta during a match played at the Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso sports facility. The game ended in the Fourth Region's favor, however what really stood out about the match were the incidents that involved players from both teams as they made their way to the locker rooms during halftime. A scuffle ended with at-home players Osvaldo Gullace, Carlos Tejas and Coach Víctor Milanese being expelled from the match along with Antofagasta players José Pedrozo and Cristián Rojas. Rojas is currently facing a more complex situation after he was arrested by police and charged with assault following the incident. SANTIAGO.– Three people were killed and 31 injured this morning in a head-on collision between an inter-provincial bus and a private vehicle at kilometer 1,400 of Route 5 north, about 30 kilometers from Antofagasta. According to Captain Jorge Araya Parodi of the Second Commissary of Antofagasta, the accident happened when a Honda Accord driven by Arnoldo Fidel Cruz Moro, who was driving from Calama to Antofogasta with four passengers (two minors and two adults), crossed the median of the highway and had a frontal collision with a Turbus company bus traveling from Santiago to San Pedro de Atacama. To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- Workers at the port of Antofogasta, who serve the large copper mines of the country, began their second day of strike today while waiting for the administration to offer some kind of response to their demands for better wages. The strike has caused a delay in some shipments of the red metal, such as that of the company Xstrata Copper, which belongs to the global mining giant Xstrata. The port of Antofogasta channels important private copper shipments as well as, although on a lesser scale, those of Codelco – the largest copper producer in the world. To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- A 23 year old man identified by the initials C.A.T.P. is currently listed in critical condition after he was attacked by six individuals who were trying to rob him outside of his home in Antofogasta. The incident occurred along Avenida Granaderos as the 23 year-old victim was leaving a club near the city's bus terminal, where the young man had planned to catch a bus back to his home. As he waited for the bus, however, a group of six individuals suddenly approached him and his friends. Despite being threatened with a knife, the victim refused to hand over his belongings and was subsequently attacked and seriously injured by one of the assailants.
