SANTIAGO.- The Chilean national soccer team held their first practice today in Japan following a long trip that included stopovers in Paris and Tokyo before finally arriving in the city of Hirono, which has a 13 hour time difference with Chile. The team, led by Eduardo Berizzo and Luis Bonini, arrived early in the morning Japanese time, (nighttime in Chile) and, after only a brief rest, held their first practice in Asia during the afternoon (early morning in Chile). The Kirin Cup matches will begin next week, however the coaching staff for the national team hopes to observe the squadron, which includes newcomers Braulio Leal, José Rojas and Iquique native Edson Puch. To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- Wasting a great opportunity to cement a position in the Shanghai Masters, Fernando González (ATP Nº11) fell to Czech player Tomas Berdych (ATP Nª27) by a monumental 6-0 and 6-4 at the Tokyo ATP Tournament (Japan, 860 thousand dollars, cement). The loss has kept him from moving through to the tournament semifinals, and even worse, he was unable to accumulate the points necessary to enter the top ten player list of the "ATP Champions Race". To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- The Chilean National Soccer Team returned in two groups from Asia after playing two friendly matches against Japan (0-0) and South Korea (1-0). Despite being drowsy from the 32-hour trip, the team (coached by Marcelo Bielsa) arrived satisfied, not only because they left Asia undefeated, but also because neither of their two opponents managed to get past goalkeeper Miguel Pinto to score against them. Pinto took the liberty of highlighting the efforts put forth by the team's defense, as well as his own performance. "I am happy with the way I played and am satisfied because they didn't score any goals against me.
