To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- Chile slammed Germany by a score of 2-1 early this morning during a match to define the fifth to eighth places of the IX Women's Roller Hockey World Championship in Yui Honjo, Japan. The reigning world champions seemed to still be suffering from their surprising elimination from the tournament after losing to the United States (1-2), leading to a less confident defense that initailly gave the Germans an advantage. Nevertheless, the match revealed the strength and talent of players Fernanda Urrea and Francisca Puertas, who helped to turn the scoreboard around and cement a victory for Chile that somewhat helps to mend the wound left from Wednesday's match. To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- Spain's national team defeated the United States today by a score of 7-1 during the last match of the regular phase for group B of the IX Women's Roller Hockey World Championships in Yuri Honjo, Japan. The result means the U.S. finished the round as the second qualifier in the series and will face Chile at the quarter finals. Meanwhile, England defeated South Africa 5-1, Argentina tied with no goals against Germany, and Portugal triumphed over France with a score of 4-0. The "Marcianitas", coached by Mauricio Lleras, had already passed on to the quarterfinals, where they hope to revalidate their champion status after taking first place in the 2006 competition in Santiago. To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- With many fresh young faces, Marcelo Bielsa embarks this January 18th upon the Chilean National Team's Asian tour. At 12:00 PM today, the coach for the Chilean team announced the roster of players who will travel to Japan. The list includes only one athlete who plays for a foreign club: midfielder Mathias Vidangossy of the Spanish club "Almería". The rest of the players that were chosen all play for local teams, including two stand-out players from the recent tournament finalist, the University of Concepción.
