SANTIAGO.- Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mariano Fernández, confirmed this morning that the Chilean government has decided to ask for explanations from the ambassadors of Brazil and Argentina after the diplomats from both nations issued statements in Lima in favor of Peru's maritime claim at The Hague. SANTIAGO.- Undersecretary of Health, Jeanette Vega, reiterated this morning that Gladys Azócar, 38, who is currently hospitalized at the Clínica Las Condes medical center for infection of the AH1N1 virus, continues in serious condition following respiratory failure. "She is in serious condition, we transported her to Clínica Las Condes last night because she suffered a catastrophic respiratory failure and we needed to connect her to a machine (…) that functions like an external lung", Vega told Radio Cooperativa. SANTIAGO.- President Michelle Bachelet stated this morning that the Chilean economy will be amongst those most capable of rapidly recuperating from the crisis, pointing out that forecasts predict a period of between five and seven months. "We believe that Chile is going to be one of the countries to recover fastest", the Head of State said on Radio Cooperativa. The President also said that economic predictions released yesterday by the Central Bank "are in line with the scenarios that we have been working with". In the financial entity's Monetary Policy Report (IPoM) for May, the Central Bank predicts a range of between -0.75% and 0.25% for national economic growth this year and indicates that the figure is more likely to be towards the lower end of the spectrum. SANTIAGO.- Undersecretary of Health Jeannette Vega has said that effects of the human influenza virus are less serious than was previously thought, but has not ruled out the possibility that the illness will remain present in the world for quite a while. "It seems that the illness is very contagious, but less serious than what had been originally thought. Although there are cases that lead to respiratory complications, such incidences are rare", the authority stated during an interview with Radio Cooperativa. Vega added that the epidemic will not be as severe as had been expected, and said that it "could be like having an additional flu epidemic". VALDIVIA.- A fire is currently burning down a strip club and a colonial home that serves as a center for technical training in downtown Valdivia. According to Radio Cooperativa, the blaze began at approximately 6:40 AM this morning and is currently being fought by five fire departments. Preliminary information indicates that the fire may have begun at a strip club. The Chief of Valdivia Firefighters, Víctor Wersikowsky, said that the colonial-style home was a historical landmark for the city (owned by the Carrasco family) and had been abandoned. Chief Wesikowsky asserted that the fire-fighters “have practically controlled” the flames.

SANTIAGO.- After Chile confirmed that it has been negotiating the purchase of F-16 planes from the Netherlands, Peruvian congressman Juvenal Ordóñez (who also belongs to Foreign Affairs Department of Peru) has said that he will ask the United States government to prevent the transaction from being completed. According to Radio Cooperativa, Ordóñez contended that he is going to “propose the idea that the Peruvian government should get in touch with the United States of America in order to ask the nation to intervene and prevent the purchase”. It is worth noting that the United States is authorized to supervise the purchase, since the aircrafts of are U.S. origin. According to Ordóñez, it would be logical to postpone Chile’s purchase of the planes “until the situation is clarified and we know exactly whether or not this is about replacing equipment or not”.

SANTIAGO.- At least $20 million pesos worth of valuable goods were taken by a group of burglars who entered a private residence last night in Huechuraba. According to preliminary reports, the individuals entered a residence located on Camino Cintura in the sector of Pedro Fontova, where they threatened the owner of the home, his wife and their five children. Some of the victims were reportedly tied up. According to Radio Cooperativa, the suspects later searched the house for items of value and then stole the family's vehicle to flee the scene with cash, jewelry and electronics. Meanwhile, in La Florida, three intruders stole five million pesos worth of items from a home after threatening the owners of the residence at the entrance to the house.
