SANTIAGO.- 21,734 tickets have already been sold for the second-to-final home match of the Chilean National Soccer Team in the qualifying phase for the South Africa 2010 World Cup. On Wednesday, June 10 at 9:00 PM in the National Stadium, Chile goes up against Bolivia in what could potentially be a huge step for the National Team in their race to make it to South Africa. The tickets are on sale at Paris department stores in Iquique, La Serena, Viña del Mar, Valparaíso, Rancagua, Curicó, Talca, Concepción and Santiago; and are also available at the Feria del Disco in Antofagasta, La Serena, Viña del Mar, Rancagua, Talca, Chillán, Concepción, Temuco, Osorno and Puerto Montt. Ticket prices run from $9,800 pesos in the general stands to $143,800 in the "high pacific" seats. An additional 20% discount is offered if one purchases with the "Mas" card ($7.800 general). SANTIAGO.- The Chilean national soccer team held their first practice today in Japan following a long trip that included stopovers in Paris and Tokyo before finally arriving in the city of Hirono, which has a 13 hour time difference with Chile. The team, led by Eduardo Berizzo and Luis Bonini, arrived early in the morning Japanese time, (nighttime in Chile) and, after only a brief rest, held their first practice in Asia during the afternoon (early morning in Chile). The Kirin Cup matches will begin next week, however the coaching staff for the national team hopes to observe the squadron, which includes newcomers Braulio Leal, José Rojas and Iquique native Edson Puch. SANTIAGO.- The 13th Chilean soccer "Apertura" tournament is scheduled to begin this Friday with a match between Huachipato and Iquique. The most gripping event however, will take place on Sunday at the National Stadium, where Universidad de Chile will go up against Colo Colo for another face-off between Chile’s two biggest football rivals. The match has been confirmed by ANFP for 4:00 PM on April 19th, at the athletic complex in Ñuñoa. The clash will be crucial, especially for Colo Colo, given the team's shaky performance in the local tournament, where the group has gone six games without a win. In fact, Coach Marcelo Barticiotto has projected that the match will pull the team out of its current slump.

SANTIAGO.- The Chilean Sub-17 soccer team already has a roster of players set to take the field at the upcoming South American tournament for the category, scheduled to take place in Iquique. The team's coach, César Vaccia, has released the list of 20 players that will participate in the championship. Vaccia met yesterday with coaches of the major sub-17 soccer clubs to impart information about participating on the team, as well as the names of those who have been summoned for the event. The event was attended by a majority of Santiago team coaches, as well as provincial affiliate trainers. Chile will debut in the Sub-17 South American Cup on April 18th against Uruguay. The team will then face Argentina on the 21st, Ecuador on the 27th and Venezuela on the 30th of April. SANTIAGO.- Colo Colo is fast approaching its lowest point since the short-term tournaments were created in Chile. The squad, coached by Marcelo Barticciotto, has not attained a victory over the course of its last five matches, causing the team to free-fall on the positions table. The latest drop took place this weekend after playing a home game against Iquique. Now, not only is the team out of the playoffs, they are also only two points away from dropping out of the tournament. Colo Colo presently has 11 points – two more than Palestino, which may be the last team to face a direct elimination at this point in the tournament. SANTIAGO.- The president of the Medical Association of Chile, Pablo Rodríguez, has responded to a report that Colombian doctor Olmedo Valencia allowed his 11 year-old son to assist him in an operation on a patient at the regional hospital in Iquique, saying that it is an act that represents a very serious lack of ethics. “I want to be very clear about this. There is a lack of ethics and judgement here, this is not something that should be done”, asserted Rodríguez. The president of the organization mentioned that he spoke to his counterpart in Iquique, who confirmed that the situation had occurred in one of the small operating rooms at the medical facility. To see international photos, click here SANTIAGO.- Residents living in the northern Chilean regions of Arica, Parinacota and Tarapacá where shaken from their sleep this morning by a medium-intensity earthquake. According to information received by the National Emergency Office (Onemi) from the Regional Civil Protection and Emergency Organization, the quake occurred at 6:10 AM. The tremor reached an intensity of 6 degrees on the Mercalli scale in Pisagua, Alto Hospicio and Iquique, while registering 5 degrees in the town of Huara; 6 degrees in Pozo Almonte and Camiña; 2 degrees in Pica; 3 degrees in Tocopilla and 2 degrees in Antofogasta. Information from the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) of the Chilean Navy places the preliminary epicenter of the tremor 55 kilometers to the northeast of Iquique, measuring a magnitude of 5.2 degrees on the Richter scale.
