SANTIAGO.- On the one-year anniversary of the death of National Police Director José Alejandro Bernales and his entourage in a helicopter accident in Panama, the Chilean government has expressed hope that the nation will announce its decision regarding the damages agreement for the families of the victims before President Martín Torrijos leaves office. "We trust that the agreement reached by the current governmental administration of Panama will be signed and, of course, with regards to the execution of the agreement there is the matter of State continuity, (because) here we are not only talking about a governmental administration, we are talking about the Panamanian State and that is the point that we need to stress", stated Minister of Foreign Affairs Alberto Van Klaveren. The stance taken by the Executive Branch was reaffirmed by Attorney Luis Bates, who is the president of...

SANTIAGO.- Unmatchable. This is the word that can be used to describe Chilean tennis star Fernando González' (ATP No.12) performance so far at the Roland Garros Tournament. The Chilean athlete triumphed today in a heated match against French player Josselin Ouanna (ATP No.134) with set scores of 7-5, 6-3 and 7-5 in one hour and 54 minutes. It was the first time the two players had ever faced each other, which lead to some uncertainty concerning the level of game play that would be observed in Ouanna. The French player however, did not disappoint. Meanwhile, González, who today served up 11 aces and committed 26 non-forced errors, will face Romanian player Víctor Hanescu (ATP No.33) in the fourth round. This is the third time González has made it to the fourth round of the tournament during his...

SANTIAGO.- The Ninth Court of Appeals of Santiago decided to confirm the prosecution dictated by Minister Juan Eduardo Fuentes against former member of the armed forces José Paredes Márquez accusing him of perpetrating the murder of singer-songwriter Víctor Jara. The decision was reached after the court heard the arguments of prosecuting attorney Nelson Caucoto and the representative for the Human Rights program of the Ministry of Interior Relations, Karina Fernández. Attorney María José Dávila, who was to defend Paredes, was not present at the hearing. In a unanimous decision, ministers Emilio Elgueta, Mario Carroza and incorporated attorney Jorge Lagos also ruled to keep Paredes Márquez, who is currently being held at the CAS high-security prison facility, in custody.
